The Last Airbender
Backstory:
In the movie “The Last Airbender”, the world revolves around the four elements; water, earth, fire, and air. There are four nations in the world, with each specialization in one of the four elements. People are capable of bending one of the elements, however there are a lot of people who are unable to bend an element. But for people who can bend an element, they have extraordinary power that can help make their life easier, but unfortunately there can be some consequences. Just like in our world, there are conflicts that erupt on a daily basis. Same goes for the world in “The Last Airbender”. But unlike our world, the world in this movie has a ‘superhero’ that prevents conflicts from happening. The avatar, master of all four elements, brings balance to the four nations. Although the avatar is above all the strongest bender in the world, even he has trouble bringing balance to the four nations, especially since he is only twelve years old.
- What is the nature of external reality – the world around us?
Avatar Aang is primarily an air bender, although as the avatar, can bend all four of the elements. The air nomads are the peacekeepers of the world, and are known for their kind and peaceful ways of life. The air nomads mediated and remained calm in troublesome times in order to keep balance to their people. Just like the air nomads, avatar Aang is a very peaceful boy. Throughout the movie he is kind-hearted towards nature, and respects all walks of life. Aang only uses his bending powers when he is in trouble, and only activates the ‘avatar state’ in extreme cases. The ‘avatar state’ is when Aang is at his strongest, and can also become uncontrollable at times. Thankfully, Aang only uses this power when absolutely necessary. Overall, Aang only uses violence when defending himself or others, and prevents danger from happening to the world around him and continues to maintain balance between the four nations.
- What happens to a person at death?
When a person dies in the movie, it is viewed the same way that we view death in the real world. Family is gathered, a funeral takes place, and sorrow roams the air. But for the avatar, death is very different. When the avatar dies, he or she is reincarnated into the next element in the cycle; water, earth, fire, and air. The life of each avatar is not entirely lost, as their spirit is still attached to the life of the current avatar. Each preceding avatar passes on their wisdom to the current avatar. It is very interesting to learn how the avatar cycle works out. Even though the avatar dies, their spirit is still with the current avatar so they are never alone to face the many challenges of bringing balance to the world.
- How do we know what is right and wrong?
As the avatar, Aang has to decide between right and wrong in many different situations. It is his job to bring balance to the world, and in some cases choosing between right and wrong is a lot harder than one may think. Throughout the movie Aang faces many challenges where he has to choose between right and wrong, especially when facing his enemies. In most attempts he tries to talk out the problems instead of resorting to violence, but unfortunately his enemies aren’t as kindhearted as Aang. While in other cases he must use his bending abilities right away in order to defend himself or his friends. But in all of the cases that Aang faces, he has to choose between right and wrong in a way that will bring balance for those in need, rather than those who try to bring harm to the world. As the avatar it is his job to protect the innocent, and if choosing violence is the only ‘right’ choice to defend those in need, then Aang must use his powers to fulfill his duty as the avatar.
