Survivor: Chapter 4!

Hey everyone, Raven here, back with another chapter of Survivor! I added some action and romance into this chapter to make the story a little more dramatic. However, it will get a little gory and bloody at the end, so those who aren’t a fan of violence, I suggest not reading this chapter. Well, enjoy! [Next Chapter will be up on: 24/4/14]

Chapter 4: Death and Despair

I screamed loudly (luckily not loud enough for everyone at camp to hear) as Nickle’s chest bled more and more, making the dusty colored ground turn into a red spot. I couldn’t take the pain anymore, and in an instant, went back to the campsite. When I got there, everyone else, including Tes and RC, were out cold, fast asleep on blankets and in sleeping bags. I sneak over to my spot as if nothing ever happened, and waited for everyone to awaken. However, I must’ve fallen asleep again, as the next thing I remembered, everything was dark and there was a bunch of talking. “Hey guys, so…what’s going on?” Tes started.

“Not much, we’re just discussing how we should gather up food, after all we haven’t eaten all day.” Shad replied. I groaned, and still lying down, I turned myself to where I heard the two boys. In the middle of camp, the 4 guys had formed a small circle.

“Yeah.” Morde explained, “We’re just assigning jobs to people. I’m the patrolman, and other people will be in charge of gathering food. Meanwhile a few more will set the campfire up, and all of that.”

“Hey, have you guys seen Nickle by the way? We’re thinking he’ll be a gatherer, but we need to tell him.” Guido questioned the small group with suspicion filling his dark green eyes. I was tempted to actually wake myself up and say what happened, but then I’d probably get killed by Tes. Instead, everyone thought I was still asleep, as my eyes were closed, but I was wary of what was happening.

“Um…Nickle? Nope, uh…haven’t seen him. I haven’t seen him for a while actually.” Everyone who saw Nickle’s death would know that voice was Tes’. I shivered and stood up, ready to grab Tes’ knife and kill him on the spot, but their conversation continued, so I wouldn’t get a chance. I laid back down and pretended to sleep again. “Um…I’m going to go ahead and go…uh..um…I’ll start gathering nuts..and berries.”

“Hey Tes, is something on your mind?”

“Yeah, we could all talk about it. We’re all bros.”

Tes stayed silent for a slight moment. He was now slurring and quickly saying his words. That’s how nervous he was. “Nothing you guys will understand.” I heard his footsteps run off into the distance, and into the dark forest. I decided its time for me to “wake up”. As I open my eyes, I see Ravenclaw looming over me.

“Hey, Raven? I’m sorry to wake you and all, but…I need to talk to you about someone.”

“Sure, I’m coming right now.”

RC smiled and led me to Abby’s tent. Abby herself was standing there, waiting for us to come. “So…girls. I wanted to talk to you about Tes. During our nap, he asked me for a private talk with him, and…” Oh, crap, not again. I thought. The events flashed before my eyes; Tes and RC going from camp, seeing Nickle come and stand up for the poor girl, hearing the short fight between the boys, smelling death and intensity bleeding through Nickle’s blood.

“Raven? Raven, you there? Wake up!!” I blink. I’m back in the real world, not in the past. RC and Abby are standing in front of me, confused looks on their faces.

“Oh, sorry…I was just…thinking to myself. As we were saying..?”

Abby nods as if to say, That’s fine. and questioned RC about the deceased boy. “So…Tes was there, and are you sure he did something to Nickle?”

This is the perfect time to tell them what I saw… “Uh..guys? I just wanted to say-” …but RC butted in and interrupted.

“Yeah, and I’m scared SICK! What if he goes after me because he thinks I know he’s dead?!”

I kept trying to fit a word in for a pretty long time. The two girls didn’t listen though, they just cooked up some gorey theories of what could’ve happened between Nickle and Tes. “I know what happened…” The two worried girls turn around and look at me.

“What did you say, Raven?” Abby asks as RC peered over the young girl’s shoulder. Finally, I’d gotten their attention.

“Oh, never mind… RC, we’ll help you. If anything else happens, just tell us.”

RC’s frown was flipped upside down into a wide grin. She stood up, and started clinging and hugging the both of us. “Thanks, girls. You guys are the best.” She then dashed out of camp with tears of happiness streaking her bright cheeks, assumably to go hunting. I sat at Abby’s side, and looked at the fear that was in her eyes. She stared back at me, and heaved a deep sigh.

“I know what happened to Nickle. While everyone was asleep, I heard Tes and RC making their way out of camp, and they woke me up, so I went to see what’s going on. Tes confessed his love to her, but she denied. Nickle came in to play, and…Tes got angry…Nickle is dead.”

The fear grew onto Abby more, and we sat in silence as we thought of Nickle. Tension swept through the air around us, and it only grew worse as Purple came and sat next to us. “Hey, have you guys seen Cece? I think she wandered off looking for some extra supplies, and she hasn’t come back. So…may I hang out with you guys for now?”

Abby’s teeth gritted into a look of anger. Annoyed, she whispered in my ear, “She’s just a kid, she can’t hang out with us.”

“Trust me, I have experience. I’ve trained many young ones back before theuilane trip.” I replied, gazing back into Purple’s hopeful eyes. “Of course you can. We’re going to go hunt for a little bit first to get you some food.”

Abby’s face now looked exactly like Tes’ when he was conflicting with Nickle. “Yeah. Just…yeah.” She then stood up and stormed off in the direction of where the plane had crashed. Purple gave me a small smile in thanks, and went the way Abby did. Now, the campsite was half empty, all of the boys and myself were the only ones there. Since I had nothing much to do, I decided to take a quick glimpse at what they were doing.

“Well, its settled then. Tes and I are gatherers, Morde is the lookout, and Guido… I guess that means you’re our hunter.” Shad explained, proposing what the boys’ plan was going to be. Guido turned and gave me a smile and a wave, and I beamed. Maybe we could go hunting sometime, that would be a nice getaway from survival. I’m snapped out of my daydreaming when Shad hisses, “Guido, you’re getting off topic. Anyway…” he shows a final embarassed look on his face before listening to my brother again.

“Fine, chill, dude.”

Well, I guess we could go right now? I strolled over to where the four boys were planning, and dropped into their conversation. “Hey, Guido? I can help you hunt if you want, just in case you need some extra hands.”

“Sure, Rave. Come on, this way.” He proceeded to trek off to the marshy area of the lake, but was held back by Shad. My older brother shook his head. The moment he did that, all I felt was unfortunate, with dread rushing through my body. I couldn’t get to know him, which meant just another conflict.

“Way to split whatever you have up, but no, Raven is not going anywhere with you.”

Guido sighed and look at Shad with trusting eyes as if he were a little kid wanting to buy a toy. “Aw, come on man. You can trust me, I’ll protect her from anything that comes like a bear or something.” he pleaded.

I began shuffling timidly away from the small group. This isn’t helping…I think I have second thoughts about this. “B-bears..?” I managed to stammmer, not wanting to be the next one to die. Being eaten by a bear would be a kind of dumb way to die…

Luckily, Guido was just messing with me a little, but Shad was serious. “No. Since none of our family is here, I’m technically her guardian. And, I say no, you cannot hang out with her anymore.”

Guido knitted his eyebrows at me as if to say, ‘Sometimes, he gets just a little to angry for me.’ I nodded in agreement, and he rolled his eyes. “Fine. I’ll go on my own.” His pleading eyes turned into gloomy forest green pools of sadness as he trudged off towards the lake. I looked at Shad and got ready to literally punch him. “You’re so unfair!” I howled, dashing off behind Guido. I felt the sweat pouring down my face. This descision would probably kill me, but at least I was trying to protect him. Finally, I caught up with him, and we soon arrived at the lake.

“Hey, are you sure this is okay?” Guido asks. He was probably a little bit nervous about Shad’s anger, but I turned and attempted to relax him.

“Yes I’m sure. We’ll be fine, Shad even SAID it was okay.”

We walked over to the water, and Guido showed me how to fish without the use of fishing poles. He caught a pretty small fish, probably a meal for one person. I stepped forward at the edge of the lake, and dipped my head into the water, like I was bobbing for apples or something. The water was colder than ice and dirtier than mud, but it was worth it, as I felt something heavy pass my jaws. “Oh, I’ve got a big one, help!” I yelled from under the water.

“Aw, come on, you got it.”

Now I couldn’t breathe, and my face was freezing up. “No seriously, hurry! My face is freezing!” Guido came up from behind me and clung onto my leg, pulling it. Soon I was released from the water, and my face felt warm with the sunlight as I landed on my back. I turned my head to catch a look at what we’d caught: a large fish, about the size of a pillow. Guido and I laughed, and we quickly stood up to take a better look at the fish.

“Damn, look at that thing…” Guido breathed, a little surprised, “I didn’t know fish of that size lived in these waters. We’ll be eating for days!”

“Well, I guess we’ll try finding some more, then…”

“Okay, but first…” Guido took a step towards me. At first, I thought he was going to kill me, but instead, my cheeks suddenly felt flushed. My eyes widened and my whole body burned as his lips touched mine. We had kissed. However, the moment was interrupted greatly when I heard angry footsteps trampling towards us.

“Raven Fae Nelson! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!?!” Shad had found us at the completely wrong time. We were going to be screwed up. “Mhm. What are you doing in the middle of the freaking wilderness with some boy?!”

“W-we were just hunting…! I promise!!”

“Sure. Hunting for each other’s lips!” He made quotation marks with his fingers as he said the word ‘hunting’.

Guido quickly paced in front of me, sort of using himself as a shield. “I wasn’t doing anything with your sister, I swear. We were just hanging out and getting to know each other.” Shad roughly grabbed me by the ear and brough me to his side.

“Yeah, a little to well for my liking, thank you very much. Raven, come on. We’re going back to the campsite.” He dragged me behind him. I craned my neck to look at Guido one last time, trying not to get the dust into my clouded eyes.

“I’m sorry…I’m so, so sorry…”

When we get back, my brother forces me onto my blanket, and begins pacing back and forth, lecturing to me about his feelings. “Raven, I’m disappointed in you. I just can’t believe…my own sister would do that. I was worried sick about you! I didn’t know what could’ve happened to you, like if a creature had gotten to you, anything!”

“I was okay.” I hissed from the blanket, “I had Guido with me, and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.”

Shad and I quarreled for at least 20 minutes before Guido decided to come back. “Guys! Guys!!” he reported, “I saw Tes, and he was carrying Nickles body, and Nickle was dead, and-” he stopped telling us about what he saw when he saw Shad guarding my blanket. “Shad? Are you okay…?”

Shad whirled around and glared at him. “YOU. You’re the one who started all of this! If you weren’t on this plane, then none of this would’ve happened!”

“Shadow…” I murmured, trying my hardest to calm him. He just pushes me down.

“No. No more ‘Mr. Nice Guy’. Guido, just stop prowling all over my little sister! NOW!!” Shadow ran towards an alarmed Guido, hit him on the head and knocked him unconscious.

Everybody gasped with shock and fear.

“And, you, Raven. You’re just a kid!”

I stand up and grab a dagger I’d been hiding under my blanket, in case anything happened. “Well, this kid you’re talking about is 16 years old. Just stop being such a control freak!” I hold the dagger high above my head to prepare for some defense.

However, Shad didn’t fight back, he just stood there, supressing a dark frown. “Well, why don’t you just leave me alone and stop being such a selfish brat? You know what? I’ll just kill you right here and now with my bare hands.”

“Y-You wouldn’t do that, w-would you..? I’m your own sister!!” Shock and agreement ripples through the other survivors.

“Oh, I would.”

“Challenge accepted then.” Clenching my fists and clinging the dagger, I ran towards Shadow. Suddenly, a blur rushed through my path, knocking Shadow out of the way and stopping me in my tracks. “Guido!”

“Back down.” Guido growls, looking ready to fight. Shad shakes his head, just like he had before. The boy then jumps towards my brother, and a huge dust cloud forms. When it disappears, Guido is standing over him. Shad’s body is covered in wounds, and blood dripped from his dark hair. My stomach fluttered as a treacherous silence and a jolt down my spine made my body shudder.

“What have you done…?” I yelled at Guido, dropping my dagger and staggering over to the limp body of my brother. “Shadow?” I shook him. “Shadow, are you okay…?” I prodded him. “Shad?!” I yelled in his ear. All of that was no use. He was gone, and it was Guido’s fault. “YOU MONSTER. You KILLED my own brother!” I yelp, dashing into the forest.

The tears ran down my face like rivers from my eyes as I ran off. Why did it have to be me put on this island?
