Survivor: Chapter 5

Hey IW, Raven here! I’m sorry this chapter is (1 day) late. I hope you guys really enjoy this chapter (WARNING: This chapter has the most death in the whole story. If you don’t like blood or death, I don’t suggest reading this chapter of Survivor. You’ve been warned! ;3).

Chapter 5: Twists and Turns

I sat staring at the river, my legs cupped around my shivering blood-stained arms, thinking everything seemed wrong around now. The fact that Morde’s plan had just withered away, the fact that nobody was getting along anymore, the fact that my brother was dead. I just felt like…I’d just gotten a whole bunch of weights dropped onto my body. All of those weights disappeared when someone’s light footsteps came towards my trembling body. “Um…hey, are you alright?” That was RC’s voice. “I saw what happened back there, and I just wanted to say that I’m sorry.”

I kept my gaze towards the ripples of the water, throwing pebbles that caused small splashes to make beautiful patterns in the stream. Finally, I turned to look at her, the tears still wet in my eyes. “Oh, yeah, I guess I’m doing okay. I’m just so…angry, and sad at the same time. It just doesn’t make sense.”

“Oh, I feel you there. If you think about it, Guido did you more good than bad.”

Guido. The angry look on his face when his body was on top of Shad’s. It all came rushing back to me like the stream was flooding. I really wanted to continue our relationship, but I needed more…reason. “Wait…how? He killed my own brother.” I asked, barely managing to get the words ‘killed’ and ‘brother’ out of my mouth.

“Raven.” RC snapped her fingers in my face, to make sure I was listening. “He saved your life, and you have to acknowledge that. Shad could’ve badly hurt- or even killed you if he were still alive right now.” My body freezes with shock, and I wipe the tears from my dull green eyes, making them brighten up like gems again. I nodded at her, and she hauled me to my feet. I guess its time I just got over this and continued…

“Fine…”

“Well come on, let’s get back.” RC gave a smile and took my hand, making me feel a bit better. And then, flipping her cinnamon brown hair behind her back, she hauled me back to the campsite. As we made our way in,the murmurs of the remaining 6 people began to spark into questions for me, asking if I was worried or hurt. However, everyone was hushed into a sudden silence when Guido trudged up to me, a guilty look painted all over his face.

“I’ve thought about what I’ve done, and I just wanted to say I’m sorry. You can choose to forgive me, but…you don’t have to if you don’t want to.” he muttered, barely letting me hear what he had just said. Guido then turned his back towards me, the back of his blue jersey and jeans stained with blood. Shad’s blood. I hesitated for a moment, and glanced at RC with pleading eyes. She slowly nodded. Let it go… I thought as I looked up at him with more courage this time.

“No, no, no. You know what? I overreacted, and I’m really sorry…can we just…make up now?”

“Yeah, that would be for the best.” he grinned, sighing with high amounts of relief as he kissed my cheek. I blushed, kissing him myself.

RC’s hopeful stare at us turned into a beaming smile, and her bright blue eyes brihtened up even more. “Well yay, everybody’s friends again! Anyway, how many people are we down to?” All was quiet except for the tweeting in the distance of some bluejays nearby.

“Five. And including me, that makes six.” Tes finished his counting and went over it again just to double-check. “Yup, si-“

“And Cece. That makes seven…” Purple interrupted, her young and childish smile now removed from her face. She shuddered, and looked up towards Tes, seeming a bit annoyed.

“Purple… We aren’t going to count Cece for now, unless she comes back.” I turn to look at the forgetful look on her face, and her black hair just seemed to get darker along with the purple tips on it.

“But…she’s alive! I know it!”

“She probably is, but since she’s not here, we aren’t going to count her for now, okay?”

Purple nodded, and wandered out of camp, assumably to go hunting or exploring. Abby left as well, most likely doing the same thing as Purple. “Hey Raven?” Guido asked me, “Do you want to come for a quick walk around the island for a bit? We might find something that everyone needs.”

I nod. “Well, since there’s nobody holding me back, I guess so. I’ll meet you at the river, and I’ll be there in five minutes.” Guido then grabbed a small knife to hunt with, and turned to wave at me before hiking towards our meeting place. Now, I was left alone in camp with RC and Tes. Now is the time for her to know, I guess… “Hey RC, do you think this is a good time to ask him?” The girl slowly began to sweat, and I hugged her. I could feel her heart pounding. She then sighed, and walked up to Tes.

“You killed Nickle over me, didn’t you?” RC started their conversation. Tes looked down at her in surprise, and rolling his eyes, he admitted it.

“I know, it was a mistake. But, you can’t tell anyone, okay? If the word got out that I was a killer, I WOULDN’T GET AWAY WITH THAT! People would go after me, and throw me over in some way…”

“So, you admit that you actually killed him.”

“Yeah…I guess I do.”

“I thought you said we weren’t going to kill anyone.” RC stomped her foot, and began storming towards Tes in a rage. Her hair now seemed like it was the colour of fire, and even her eyes looked like they were engulfed by flames.

Tes stood back towards a tree just as RC had on the day Nickle had died, but he had a calm smirk instead of a scared frown. He took out a knife, preparing to stab RC through the chest. “What about Guido?! He just KILLED someone’s brother.”

“He was protecting someone, you did it out of jealousy. That’s just…horrible.”

“I can’t listen to this crap anymore, I’m leaving.” Tes kicked RC behind him, and left. RC then dashed off in the opposite direction he had gone, the tears streaming down her face, extinguishing the flare that was in her eyes just then. I guess she just needs a bit of alone time…I’ll talk to her later.

Soon enough, Guido and I were skipping stones through the river and hanging out. All seemed pretty casual. The birds were tweeting a beautiful song, the wind was wild and blew at our faces and bodies. Suddenly, our hanging out was interrupted-yet again- by a rustling in the bushes behind us and a scream in front of us. “Guido..? What’s that?”

“How should I know, probably just a bird or something.” he replied, ignoring what had just been heard. However, the bloodcurdling screech was heard again. Guido’s eyes widened with surprise. He looked towards the bushes and where the scream was heard. “Okay, go look in the bushes. I’ll go investigate the scream.” I quickly swim across the stream and towards the random sound. When I’d gotten through the bushes, what I’d seen should’ve made me think I’d lost my mind. However, all I felt was dread. There, in my sight, was a pile of rocks. I hurriedly cleared away the dust and boulders, and saw Tes’ body beneath them, without any signs of life. My gaze glanced upwards, towards a cliff. At the top, there was a dark…shadow. It was large and its whitish colored eyes glared at me, making me seem paralyzed. The “thing” then retreated. Tes was dead. What if that shadow has something to do with one of us…? I thought with curiousity as I floated the dead boy’s body down the river.

I whirled myself around to look at the bushes. They were still rustling, but there were no screeches or yelps to be heard. Guido must be in some sort of trouble… I thought, paddling back across the lake. When I got to the other side, I saw another shocking sight. “Now. Hasn’t your mommy told you not to talk to strangers? Because strangers can do bad things to young girls like you.” A voice creepily questioned….Purple?

I nervously approached Guido’s side, holding the dagger that I almost had used to fight Shad. I was about to jump into the bristling bush, wanting to kill whatever it was that was about to hurt Purple, but something jumped out. “Is that…” Guido and I started at the same time.

There was now a boy standing in front of the small plant. He had copper brown hair and silvery eyes. His skin was light and he wore ripped jeans and a golden, sparkling hoodie, just the colour of an Australian $2 coin.

“…Nickle?!”

Nickle stopped tormenting Purple and stride over to us. Guido immediately stepped forward, and I held the dagger, ready to kill Nickle if I needed to. My hands firmly clung onto them as the two boys broke into a quarrel. “Leave her alone.” Guido grunted, knocking the other warrior to the ground.

Nickle didn’t seem to care about Guido’s attack. He just shook it off, and knocked Guido off him. “Well look who it is, the little warrior who could get away with anything, even killing someone.”

Guido gave off a small snarl as I brought myself and the dagger closer to the assumably deceased boy. “Nickle…we all thought you were dead. Everyone thought that Tes killed you. I SAW him kill you!!”

Nickle laughed. It was just like one of those creepy insane laughs that a villian would do, but with more insanity. He stopped himself from going too far, and continued to explain. “Oh, Tes didn’t kill me…In fact, I was trying to kill Tes.” He stopped talking, and gave a venomous grin.

“Well…you obviously failed,” I stated, “Everyone thought you were dead, and Tes was telling everyone that…he’d killed you.” I looked on at Guido, and he was nodding in agreement. I could tell by the look in his eyes he had a feeling that there was going to be some sort of massive fight coming up.

“Here’s the real story.” Nickle took a deep breath, and began to explain. “Me and Tes got into a fight over a certain…someone.” That someone was Ravenclaw.. “We got into a heated argument, and at first, I injured Tes in the shoulder. I was going to begin walking back to camp, but Tes continued our fight, and eventually he stabbed me with his knife.”

“But…I saw the whole thing! Tes stabbed you in the chest, right?!”

“Wrong. It must’ve just looked like my chest from your point of view, because it was actually my arm. Anyway, because of all of the blood I’d lost from my wound, I blacked out. And I’ve woken up since then, and ready to kill, too.”

Guido and I looked at each other with surprise. I looked over and behind Nickles’s back at Purple, and she looked pretty astonished as well. There was a long silence except for the breeze, before Purple finally said something. “He says that he knows where Cece is!” a small, hopeful grin began to show on Purple’s face.

“Nickle, do you know where Cece is…? We need her back at the campsite as soon as possible.”

The boy laughed his somewhat creepy laugh yet again. “Heh, do I know where Purple’s little friend is.” He turned to look at Purple with a smirk. “Well…let’s just say she’s in a better place now.” Another scary silence took place, and this time, I decided it was about time to break it.

“You…killed her?” Guido and I shuddered. Insanity had taken over Nickle. He really was ready to kill… “Nickle…how could you?” he stammered.

“Why yes. And that young one behind me? She’s next.” I took a peek at the look Guido was giving Nickle. It was a look of anger and rage. However, instead of attacking Nickle, he quickly darted over to Purple and moved her away from us. It was my fight. I lunged at Nickle and swiftly brought him to the ground. In an instant, he thrusted me away. I was now face-down with the dirt, but not for long. He charged at me, ready to land his killing blow, but I rolled underneath his feet and he tripped. Coughing, I weakly got up from my current position and stabbed him in the back with my dagger. Nickle was now barely breathing, and Guido walked up to him and snapped his neck, just to make sure.

Purple lightly walked towards us, she seemed more and more scared with every step she took. “Is he…dead…?” she stammered, the tears now drying up on her face.

“I broke his neck and Raven stabbed him in the back.” Guido replied, heavily breathing with relief. “I’d be pretty stunned if he were still alive.”

“W-why is everybody killing each other..? WHY CAN’T IT JUST STOP?!” Purple yelled, running off into the distance, the tears flowing on her face again. Now it was just Guido and I again, sitting in the middle of a forest clearing.

“It’s okay…” I murmur, “You did the right thing.”

“Yeah. Now we just need to take out Tes I guess…”

Tes. I’d completely forgot about him. “Oh yeah, about Tes…you know that rustling noise that was behind us? Well…that noise was Tes…and when I got to the bushes, he was kind of killed in a rockfall.I thought I saw something up there, but it might’ve just been me.”

“Oh…well let’s just go back I guess…”

We say nothing as we arrive back at camp. Abby, RC and Morde are there comforting Purple, just trying to tell her to get Cece’s death out of her head. However, she pushed them all away, and stormed off. Morde turned his head to look at us. “She’s…just been going through a lot today…” he sighed, “One of her close friends died, and she almost died…that’s quite a bit for one girl…”

“Well…let’s change the subject, we don’t want too much sad talk, right?” RC replied, “So. Should we all go hunting for a bit? We haven’t eaten since yesterday, and I’m starving.” Everyone nodded in agreement, and we went off and sat down on our blankets and sleeping bags. “Hey,” RC added, “By the way, where’s all the fish you and Guido caught, Raven?”

Abby answered for me, standing up and walking behind a tent we’d set up. “Guys…you told me you hid it behind the tent. It’s all gone!” Everyone gasped and sighed, a few people even holding their bellies.

“Well, I found some edible plant by the river.” Morde suggested, “It was really tasty. You guys should try them.”

What if the leaves are…poisonous? “Well if you aren’t dead by midnight, we’ll try some. Okay?”

Morde nodded. “Meanwhile, we better decide who will go gather up food for the next few days.” Everyone looked at each other. A few of us whispered among ourselves, and eventually, we decided.

“I’ll stay here with Morde so we’ll know if he survives from the leaves or not.” Abby volunteered, sitting next to Morde.

“Well, I guess it’s us three then…” Guido starts, but he pauses for a moment to think. “On second thought, Raven, you should stay here. The wounds you got look pretty bad. And by the way, the wounds were from Nickle. It turned out he was still alive, but Raven and I killed him. Tes died too, from a rock fall.”

RC’s face seemed to turn pale before she heaved a sigh, probably from relief that Tes wouldn’t be worrying her anymore. “Well, I guess it’s me and you then.” RC breathed, as Guido kissed me once more before sprinting off with RC.

A few hours later, Abby, Morde and I were looking up at the stars, trying to find bunches of constellations to entertain ourselves. “Well…the stars sure are pretty.” Abby gasped, gazing at the stars, an amazed look in her shining hazel eyes.

“That’s probably the fiftieth time you’ve said that!” Morde laughed, softly punching her side.

That was when I realized Guido and Ravenclaw weren’t back yet. “Hey guys, do you think something happened to Guido, RC and maybe even Purple? All of them still haven’t returned…?

“Huh…ye-” Morde started to agree, but was interrupted. He started having a large coughing attack. Abby and I immediately sat up and raced to his side, shivering in the cold and with nervousness.

“Morde, how many of those leaves did you eat?” I stuttered, craning my neck towards the bushes at the river.

“About fifty…”

I ran over to the watery area and picked a leaf off one of the bushes. I brought it back to the two other survivors. “Did they look like this?” Morde barely managed to nod, before his eyes began to loose its brightness. “OH, GOD! Those are Venom Leaves! First you’ll cough…then you’ll have spasms, then your heart will stop. Morde, I’m so sorry…” Before Morde could say anything else, he took one last strangled gasp before going limp. Abby screamed.

“LOOK FOR A PULSE!!!”

Hurriedly, I felt for pulses in his wrist and neck. “He’s gone…forever…” I sniffed. Abby clung to me, crying. “I’m sorry I couldn’t help you….” I repeated to his body.

“Hey guys, what are you doing?” RC giggled, strolling towards the two of us and Morde’s body.

“Morde passed just now…it was from the leaves. He ate way too many of them too quickly.” Guido’s face began to sweat. RC began muttering random things, anxiety in her barely hearable voice. “Guys? Is something wrong??”

“On our way back here…we ate some of those leaves.”
