Chapter 6: Healing and Heartbreaking

“Oh God, oh God NO!! Uh…is there some sort of cure? What’s going to happen to us..?” Guido begins questioning Abby and I, nervousness tinging his voice.

Abby and I shrugged, chills rushing down our bodies. “I-I…don’t know…do you know, Raven?” Abby asked, giving me a worried look.

A cure….I’m pretty sure there is one, but I’m unsure as well…Ah! I remember now!! “Well…” I sigh, “I remember back in training we studied some arts of survival, and we had to look at some toxic plants such as venom leaves, and I remember being told that the only cure for venom leaves are StarBerries. But…I haven’t seen any.”

Suddenly, I heard light footsteps, walking along the dusty track behind us. We whirled ourselves around, and Abby and RC sigh with huge amounts of relief. Purple had finally returned. She must’ve heard our conversation, because she said, “Wait…are StarBerries small, colorful berries that are shaped like stars?”

“Well…its pretty self explanitory…” I reply, “Why, have you seen any?”

Purple eagerly nodded, staring up towards a bunch of tall hills. “Yup, they are all up on the top of those hills, gathered under a large oak tree.” she explained. The young girl then paused for a moment, stopping to think. “I think I’ll need someone to come with me though…those hills were pretty steep.”

“I don’t think you guys will be strong enough to come…” Abby admitted gloomily. “Us three will go, you two hide nearby, just in case of any danger.”

“No, no, no. I’ll stay here with them, I know some healer skills, and someone needs to guard them. Abby, you and Purple go.” I volunteered to stay behind and watch over the two sick people, who were already beginning to cough. “Now go, and quickly! Their coughing fit is already starting!!” Abby began darting off towards the hills. “Good luck…” I whispered to Purple, right before she doggedly treked off behind her.

“Thanks, we’ll need it…”

I laid Guido and RC down, just in case, and gazed at Morde’s body. Please…don’t let them have the same fate as you… I thought sadly, taking one last peek at him before burrying him. After a while, assumably almost an hour, I glanced over my shoulder and saw Abby and Purple dashing towards us. “Hey, here they come!” I told RC and Guido, who were now having a few breathing difficulties. Before I could say, “Quick! Give them the berries!!” they rushed past us. “And…there they go…” I muttered. Why would they do tha- my thoughts were interruped by a sickening ROAR!! . “Uh…what was that?” I whipped around, and craned my neck upwards. “Holy crap…” There, standing right above me, was a large monster. It was dark blue, with several light blue and green splotches on it. “GET UP YOU GUYS!! PREPARE TO RUN!” I whimper to them. However, Guido and RC just gave off painful groans.

“W-what are you waiting for? Go without us…” Ravenclaw rasps, barely managing to look up at me. I could just imagine the pain she was in. “We’re not worth it…”

“No! I can’t lose my own best friend and boyfriend! We’ve just got to think of something, and quickly..”

“Just go….we’ll figure something out…save yourself.” Guido added. I sighed, and horrified, I ran in the direction where Abby and Purple had gone. I turned back to look at them one last time. The monster had gotten to them. I just kept running, and soon enough, I found Abby and Purple, hiding in the safety of a large bush.

“Guys…” I murmured sadly, “They made me leave them…What do we do?”

“We HIDE!!” Abby and Purple whispered at the same time. They motioned me to come towards them, but I ignored it.

“We have to save them! We can’t just leave them out to die!!”

They shook their heads, and I heaved a sigh of defeat, and crawled in between them. We all laid ourselves down, and Abby and Purple were quickly off to sleep. I felt one last tear fall down my face before I fell asleep myself.

“Raven? Raven, wake up!! We found something!!”

That was the first thing I heard as I blinked open my eyes the next morning. Purple and Abby were standing over me. “Oh, thank goodness you’re up! We found a really random track of StarBerries, and thought that you’d know something about them.” Abby told me. I immediately sat up, and made my way out from under the bush. The two girls stepped towards the colorful berries, and I followed, confused.

I then remembered. “A track of StarBerries…it means good luck! We really need to follow this path….NOW…” I wandered in the direction the track was going, and I was met with a large surprise once it had ended. “Oh my God…” I gasped, amazed at what was standing before me. Abby and Purple followed, and their eyes widened with shock. Now, in the place of all of our blankets and sleeping bags, was a large tree fort, and a large pile of food.

“Well. It’s about time you guys got back here!” a voice said happily. Guido suddenly jumped on top of me, and we got up, laughing.

RC followed, a grin on her face, instead of a groan. “Yeah, welcome back to camp!” she added.

“Wh-what happened here?”

“You guys know that monster that Abby and Purple were so scared of? He only wanted a conversation or a friend, and was curious why you had gone near his StarBerry tree.”

Abby blushed, embarrassed. She looked around the camp again. “But…where did you get all of that food? And the tree fort?” she asked, starting to eat a bag of chips.

“Oh! You mean all of this food?” Guido asked, looking at the food pile. There was cereal, tuna, fruit, chips, sardines and even cookies. Abby nodded, staring longingly at it. “The monster brought it.”

“Oh yeah, and it turns out Guido over here can speak Oreagre! And by the way, an Oreagre is what type the monster was.”

Guido laughed. “Oh, its nothing really…just an extra thing I learned in training.”

“But, what happened to you guys…?”

“Well.. it turned out he was just trying to help us, that’s all. He gave us some berries, we ate them, and now we’re better than we could’ve imagined!”

“So…where’s the Oreagre now?”

“Oh, he said he had to leave. He told us he’d be back soon though.”

I smiled. Wow…that’s so kind of him! Now we have food to last us for weeks! I thought happily. Thank goodness nobody else had died. “Wait… he didn’t bring us any water, did he?” I suddenly reminded everyone. Guido shook his head. “Do you want us to go get some?” I offered everyone as Abby stepped forward, wanting to help out.

“Yes please, after all that hard work we’ll really need some!”

“Okay… should we bring Pur-” Before I could say anything else, I looked up at the tree fort. Purple was up there in a small hammock, now asleep. I sighed. “Well, I’ll go get some water at the stream, you go to the lake.” Abby nodded, and she walked off. I got ready to make my way to the lake, but as soon as I’d gotten through a bush, I heard something….a little terrifying.

“So…what are we going to tell them?” Guido sat next to RC in the tree fort, and began to talk to her. “Tell them…?” What does he mean?? I thought, shuddering a little bit.

“About the Oreagre?”

“Yeah…remember what he said…?…” I began sprinting away when I heard the last part, breathing heavily and sweating into the stream. “He wants one of us to sacrifice ourselves to repay for what he has done…”
