Hey IW, Raven here!
Today, I’m coming to you with another chapter of this story! I hope you all enjoy it!~ :3
Chapter 4: The Tourney Begins
All eight Ice Warriors awoke bright and early to the sun shining through their windows. At first, they were slightly shocked about their location, until they remembered yesterday’s events. All of them made their way to the cafeteria and helped themselves to a breakfast buffet. “So…did everyone have a good sleep?” Purple asked, starting a conversation.
Raven stretched and nodded as Purple said this. “I slept like a log.” she smiled.
“Like you always do!” Snow pointed out, “I’ve almost never known you to not have a good night’s rest.” Barry chuckled a little, before noticing Frozen was now standing in the doorway. “Hi, Frozen!” Snow said, turning to where Barry was looking.
“Hello, everyone.” she replied, “I hope you all had a good night’s rest, and enough to eat.” The rest of the buffet suddenly disappeared. “The tourney begins in about 10 minutes.”
Frozen lead them all down the corridors. As she did, Guido decided to ask a quick question. “Excuse me….but how are we planning this all out?”
“Well, you will first fight some of Tes’ most powerful Polygon Clones. If you manage to beat them, you will fight each other.” Guido’s eyes widened. I have to fight these guys?! I’m probably screwed! The boy was now wrapped up in his own thoughts.
“Each other, eh?” repeated Oregan, “Well, prepare for a beating.”
“Big words for such a small brain.” Maid muttered in annoyance as they walked.
Oregan frowned at the girl’s remark, and Snow, who was sensing a fight, stepped in. “Ok, can we save these fights for the actual tournament?” he suggested, trying to retain a bit of peace between the two of them. Maid and Oregan both silently agreed, but didn’t say anything else to each other.
As they walked the last few steps, Gtu glanced at Maid. Hopefully I get the chance to talk to her today.. “Hey, Maid? I-” Gtu didn’t get to finish his sentence, as him, Frozen and everybody else had approached a door. The goddess teleported them through the door and into a floating stadium, before teleporting herself as well. Even Maid seemed a little bit amazed at how high it was. The stadium was square shaped, with steel walls to prevent people from falling off. Stands went around the whole stadium for the audience, and in the center stood a blue, rectangular platform. This was where they all would fight. “I must say…this is pretty impressive!” Maid spoke, a little bit of satisfaction in her voice.
“Ok!” Frozen interrupted the fighters’ excitement. “If you all would take a seat over there, please.” She pointed a finger to a box that divided the stands. Everybody filed into the box, with Snow, Barry, Maid and Oregan sitting in the back row, while the others sat at the front.
They all made themselves comfortable as people entered the stadium through teleporters. Everyone was pretty surprised at the diversity of the inhabitants of the Klondike Realm. There were humans, animals, robots and even a few aliens, like the Polygons. They were so awestruck; they were taken aback by the booming voice of Tes, who hovered in the center of the stadium.
“Welcome, one and all, to the 64th Army Tourney!” he cried. This announcement was followed by a large cheer. “I have personally selected eight formidable fighters, and today, they will be fighting some of my most prized…warriors.” Tes paused to let the information sink in as the audience mumbled amongst themselves before beginning to speak again. “If they make it past them, they will then fight each other. But, in the past several years, our chosen fighters haven’t won. So, let’s see if these guys can give us an entertaining time. Let the round commence!”
The audience cheered once more, even louder than before. Meanwhile, the eight fighters gave each other looks. This news about previous fighters not doing well got them thinking that they wouldn’t get as much time here. Their thoughts were blown when Tes spoke.
“First up is Snowskitter, against the Fire Polygon!”
The boy in white stood up, and left the box, saying, “Wish me luck, guys..” Snow walked down the aisle and up to the platform. Opposite him stood one of the Polygon Clones, except this one had a more muscular build, and was red. He was about to charge at the creature, when he noticed the aisle that connected the box to the platform had vanished. “Uh…was this supposed to happen?” he asked, looking over the edge to see pure darkness.
“Don’t worry.” Tes replied, “If you fall off the platform, you will be teleported back onto it.”
Snow sighed with relief, and stared down the Fire Polygon. Well, let’s get this over with… he thought, But I kinda wonder why it’s called the Fire Polygon, I don’t see anything fiery about it.
Suddenly, the creature stretched out its arms with its hands opened, as flames erupted from the wrists, and towards Snow. He flipped to avoid the attack, and where he was standing got scorched. “That was a stupid question…” he muttered aloud as the Polygon whirled around and threw a fireball at him. Snow hurdled over the mass of flame and swung his fist down, knocking the opponent back. He then ducked down and shot out with his foot, tripping the red clone up. Afterwards, he leapt on the creature, but it managed to throw him behind it.
Snow landed face first on the platform, and the Polygon got up. It turned around, and let a stream of fire at him. Snow was engulfed, causing the other seven in the box to gasp.
“What the hell?!” Barry yelled, “That thing just killed him!”
“Wait, look!” Raven butted in, pointing at the fallen fighter. Everyone looked to see that the Polygon had stopped its assault with Snow, who was slightly burnt, but perfectly fine, otherwise. The boy himself was confused, but he didn’t stop when the creature darted at him. He jumped over it and whipped around, waiting for the Polygon’s next move. As he did so, he wondered, How did I do that? I should be dead… He then felt a hot shot of pain move up his left hand. He looked at it to see a burn on his thumb, and what he thought was the symbol on the platform on his hand, made from ashes and soot.
The next thing he knew, the Polygon had him in a chokehold, and had sent a fireball raging towards his stomach. Suddenly, a large amount of determination appeared in his eyes. Everybody seemed surprised as he broke out of the hold, and jumped over the fireball, and onto the Polygon. Grabbing it by the legs, Snow swung it around, and threw it off the platform. It was teleported back, but it swayed dizzily, before collapsing.
A smile slowly formed on Snow’s face as he stepped back from the fallen clone. “I won!” The audience applauded Snow’s work as he waved to them once more, before rejoining his friends in the box.
“That was amazing!” complimented Purple.
“It was no cakewalk though.” Snow replied, “Besides, I want to know how I didn’t die from the fire.” He sat down and exhaustedly shrugged his shoulders.
“Allow me to explain!”
The eight of them jumped at the sight of Tes from behind them. “Would you mind not sneaking up on us?!” Guido sighed with annoyance.
“No.” came the reply, “Anyway, to answer your question, here in the Klondike Relam, people don’t suffer normal injuries like you usually do in an Army World. It’s still possible to die, but weapons like swords and guns don’t kill you instantly. Plus, you can’t bleed! That’s how I made this world.” Oregan opened his mouth and was about to say something, but Tes continued. “There’s no need to ask why. Besides, it’s time for the second match, Gtu is up against the Wolf Polygon!”
The Ice Warriors second in command stood up, and headed to the platform, awaiting his foe to arrive. It was a surprise to him that in front of him, stood a purple Polygon clone. It then grew claws, and fell to the ground in a crawl, before its legs turned into back legs, and its arms turned into its front legs. It growled, showing its savage teeth and glaring at Gtu with red eyes of pure hatred.
“Please. I’ve fought tough animals like this before. What makes this one so different?” he asked in a cocky tone. He got his answer when the wolf pounced at him, claws outstretched. Gtu slid under the wolf’s dive. “Damn it!” he wailed as it charged towards him. This time, Gtu flipped over it, causing the wolf to trip and land on its back. He then grabbed ahold of the beast, and tried Snow’s technique of throwing it off the platform.
“Looks like I win.” Gtu proudly spoke. However, the wolf was quick to react. It had managed to cling onto the platform’s edge with its claws, and had pulled itself up. It lunged at Gtu from behind, clawing at his back. The crowd winced as he fell forward, but when he looked at his back, he was surprised to see no blood, until he remembered what Tes had said.
The wolf darted towards Gtu, ready to land the finishing blow, but he managed to get up, and swing around with his right leg outstretched. It whacked the wolf clone across the face, giving him time to kick it yet again, but in the jaw. For a moment, he even swore he saw some of the wolf’s teeth break. However, he didn’t stay impressed with himself for long, as the Polygon wolf then sank its remaining sharp teeth into Gtu’s shoulder.
Gtu screamed in agony as he tried to shake the animal off, but it only made the pain worse. The wolf dug its teeth further and further, making a few people think that his arm was going to get ripped off eventually. However, with gritted teeth, he attempted to ignore the pain, and punched the wolf in the snout. The beast released itself from Gtu’s shoulder, giving him a chance to move far away. A few seconds later, he was dashing towards the clone, landing the final attack with a kick to the stomach.
The Polygon Clone lay there, motionless, until fading away. Gtu was a little taken back from the turn of events, but was relieved when he realized he’d won. He attempted to wave to the crowd as he returned to the box, but his shoulder played up. Thankfully, a few Polygons showed up, and lead him past the box the others were in. “Looks like I’ll be going to the medical for a bit.” he told them.
“Get better soon then!” Raven grinned, happy that he’d won. “Oh, by the way, what happened to the wolf?”
“It’s dead!”
Yet again, everybody jumped as Tes appeared. “Dead?” repeated Gtu.
“Don’t worry. The Polygons are just a work force. They have no fear of death.”
“Ok, I guess that’s reassuring. But, I thought these weren’t fights to the death.”
“For you eight!” Tes pointed at the remaining seven in the box, and Gtu. “I can’t exactly have you killed without your friends knowing. That would just be cruel.” Nothing else was said as Gtu was taken to the Medical Area. After a few seconds of silence, Tes began to address the audience. “Ok, moving on! Hopefully Gtu makes a speedy recovery, but for now…the next match!”
